Data Migration
Capitalise on the Value of Your Existing Data and Reduce Implementation Time
In some instances the best method of data migration is to collate, cleanse and prepare the data from your existing system, in whatever format it exists, and then manually enter the data into the new system.
While this method usually (but not always) involves more labour than an automated migration, clients derive a number of important benefits from manual data entry:
1. Clients have the opportunity to filter and cleanse the data before they enter it - you invariably end up with a very clean set of data. It's surprising how often fields and forms in legacy systems are used for a purpose other than what they were designed for; this can make automated data migration problematic. The old saying "garbage in, garbage out" can apply in this case.
2. Entering the data manually is excellent practice and allows you to become familiar with the application at an early stage; this ensures buy-in and provides an early return on investment.
3. Clients that have invested some "sweat equity" in getting the database populated with good, accurate, clean data are far more likely to become successful users.
However, there are instances where automated data migration/conversion is appropriate; typically when large amounts of data that have been audited and cleansed are available.
Vision treats data migration and conversion as a separate project and brings years of experience in large and complex migrations to the table. We have developed a proprietary tool - Exchange - which creates Excel-style templates for clients to populate with their data. We perform one or two trial migrations and provide the converted database to clients for User Acceptance Testing and sign-off, prior to the final go-live conversion.
Clients are responsible for supplying clean, accurate and correct data in the appropriate templates to JITWARES. JITWARES is responsible for ensuring the data is inserted into the correct tables in the JITWARESCRE database.
